The model’s best players for Gameweek 1
Single-week expected points for opening weekend — who to start, who to captain, and where ownership leaves rank on the table.

The 2026-27 season opens on 21 August. The companion Scout notes ranked every club’s first six fixtures and the players set up for those soft runs. This piece zooms into one week: model xP for GW1 only (snapshot 23 July 2026, odds-backed team rates, 500 sims).
The captain race
Haaland is still the ownership default. On single-week EV he is not the model’s pick — and he is not even the safest haul. Mbeumo’s P(≥10) leads the board; Gabriel’s clean-sheet equity plus set-piece threat puts a defender in the conversation.
Second-highest GW1 xP and the highest haul rate on the board (P(≥10) = 0.23). Hull away is a gift fixture; at 13% ownership a return moves the needle while a Haaland blank bleeds the field.
The safer United armband if you want minutes floor (p_start ~0.94) and penalties without Mbeumo’s ownership edge. Third overall on GW1 xP — still ahead of Haaland.
Bournemouth at home is fine, not free. Fourth on GW1 xP and behind Mbeumo / Gabriel / Bruno on haul probability. At 64% owned he is the rank-protection captain, not the EV maximiser.
Arsenal vs Coventry — the cleanest stack
Home λ 2.65 vs Coventry 0.48. Four Arsenal names sit inside the GW1 top 15. Defenders lead because clean-sheet probability (~0.55 for Gabriel) stacks with attacking returns the model still prices in from set pieces.
Highest single-week xP in the entire player pool. Not a meme captain — a serious one if you want clean sheet equity with upside. Ownership is high for a defender but still leaves room versus Haaland.
Tied with O’Reilly for fifth on GW1 xP at less than half Haaland’s price. Minutes are the caveat (p_start ~0.73) — confirm the XI before treating him as a locked starter.
Highest minutes floor in the Arsenal attack (p_start ~0.90) and the model’s top clean-sheet-correlated mid for the fixture. Less ceiling than Saka on a goalburst; more reliability for a first XI.
Under-owned for the fixture quality. Minutes risk (p_start ~0.73) pulls GW1 xP below Rice despite the attacking ceiling — watch preseason fitness news before paying the premium.
The enabler route into the Coventry clean sheet. Cheaper than Gabriel with still-elite GW1 xP among defenders — minutes competition with Timber / Hincapié is the only brake.
United at Hull — front-load the sugar rush
United’s away λ is 2.15 against Hull’s 0.84. Mbeumo and Bruno headline; Cunha and Shaw fill the cheap / differential slots if you are stacking the fixture rather than picking one mid.
Third United mid in the GW1 top 12. Same ownership band as Mbeumo without quite the haul rate — useful if you want two United attackers without Bruno’s £12.0 ticket.
Best GW1 value on the board among locked starters (0.90 xP per £1m, p_start ~0.95). Clean sheet probability ~0.40 away at Hull — the classic budget defender for a one-week soft fixture.
City vs Bournemouth — enabler over premium?
Matches Gyökeres on GW1 xP and sits just behind Haaland — at £6.5. Attacking full-back returns plus a soft home opener make him the City piece the model prefers if you will not pay £15.5 for the striker.
Outside the three soft fixtures
Not every strong GW1 scoreline needs Arsenal, United, or City. Two names clear the model’s top-ten bar from elsewhere.
Seventh overall despite Brighton away. High minutes floor and the model still prices meaningful goal threat — the non-big-six forward if you want Haaland money elsewhere.
Leeds at home is a quiet positive λ-diff. Locked starter with haul rate in the same band as Szoboszlai — differential mid if you are already full on United / Arsenal.
Leads Liverpool’s GW1 scores despite Newcastle away. Minutes are nailed; the fixture is not soft — hold him for the H6 runway (Forest, Ipswich, Fulham) rather than for opening-weekend fireworks.
How to use this for GW1
- Build the XI around one soft stack (Arsenal DEF / United mid / City enabler) — do not force all three.
- Captain: Mbeumo or Gabriel to attack rank; Haaland or Bruno to defend it.
- Confirm Gyökeres and Saka minutes before paying for ceiling over Rice / Calafiori reliability.
- Shaw or Calafiori are the budget defensive routes into the two softest fixtures.
